Job Description: Senior Risk Coordinator

 

Objective

The Senior Risk Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Senior Director, Risk to ensure that risks in the Africa50 Group are properly identified, measured, monitored, reported, and managed to help protect and grow the business.

 

Responsibilities

The Senior Risk Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:

·         Support the implementation of the overall risk strategy and policy and ensure risk taken by the Group is consistent with the Enterprise Risk Management framework and risk strategy.

·         Provide input to the Enterprise Risk Management framework and the risk strategy of Africa50.

·         Support the Risk team in reviewing and updating risk and risk related policies.

·         Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the Enterprise Risk Management framework, tools, practices, and policies to identify, measure, report, monitor and manage enterprise risks..

·         Support the Risk team in ensuring that the organization's risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations and the strategic imperatives of the Group.

·         Support the Risk team in conducting risk assessments, identifying, measuring, analyzing, and providing insights on strategic, financial, and operational risks.

·         Implement Compliance, AML / KYC / CFT (together, “IDD”) procedures, including participation in investee company/investor/LP reviews and providing IDD approvals required at the various stages of the project cycle.

·         Respond to IDD requests made of the Africa50 Group by other institutions and work closely with the investment team in responding to IDD issues/questions

·         Monitor, analyze and aggregate risks within the organization and report on these risks to the Senior Director, Risk.

·         Develop risk dashboards and risk reports to provide information, analyses and insights to risk owners, Business Units, and the Senior Leadership Team to monitor, mitigate and manage risks.

·         Support due diligence exercises related to investment into Businesses Units, Funds and Platforms of the Group.

·         Support the Risk team in implementing compliance with risk policies, procedures, and controls consistent with the risk appetite of the Group and Business Units.

·         Support the implementation of the internal control framework and proactively identify and implement internal control improvements.

·         Assist the Risk team with the co-ordination and implementation of internal audit work.

·         Assist in implementing education and training to ensure employees have adequate awareness and understanding of the overall risk strategy, the Enterprise Risk Management framework, other risk-related Africa50 policies and internal control standards.

·         Work with the Senior Director, Risk to build a strong risk awareness culture in Africa50.

·         Contribute to building an environment that is conducive to discussing risk at all staff levels throughout the organization.

·         Monitor and share risk management developments in similar organizations.

·         Stay abreast of industry practices and knowledge.

 

Profile:

  • At least a Bachelors’ degree in a Financial, Scientific, Mathematical, Engineering or Economics background. An honours degree would be advantageous.
  • Minimum 7 to 8 years’ in-depth experience with knowledge and understanding of risk management in an investment management, development finance, private equity, or investment banking environment.
  • Strong interest in and passion for financial markets.
  • Good knowledge of macro-economics and finance.
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written) with proven exposure to senior leadership.
  • Good time management, project management, analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Good at building relationships.
  • Self-starter.
  • Problem solver.
  • Sensitivity for balancing risk management with business opportunities
  • Should be proficient in evaluating controls through established frameworks
  • Fluent in English. French is a plus
  • Strong relationship to Africa - whether it be origin or a demonstrated long-term interest/commitment.  Existing relationships in Africa are a plus

Africa50 is an infrastructure investment platform that contributes to Africa's growth by developing and investing in bankable projects, catalyzing public sector capital, and mobilizing private sector funding.

 

Africa50 has raised over US$890 million so far from 31 African governments, the African Development Bank, and two African Central Banks, and intends to reach a target capitalization of US$3 billion. Africa50 has an independent investment process and seeks to generate commercial risk adjusted returns for its investments across key infrastructure sectors: Energy (including power generation and related parts of the value chain), Midstream gas, Transportation, ICT, Health infrastructure, Education and Fintech.

 

Purpose of role

 

As a Senior Valuations and Reporting Coordinator, you will support the team in preparing and/or reviewing valuations in compliance with IFRS and the International Private Equity and Venture Capital Valuation (“IPEV”) Guidelines, evaluate and summarize performance of investments and prepare reporting to Africa50’s stakeholders.

 

The position sits within the Finance department.

 

Principal responsibilities

 

Under the supervision of the Director, Portfolio Performance and Procurement, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:  

 

  • Perform and/or review valuations using discounted cash flows (DCF), market multiples, transaction approach and other valuation models.
  • Compile and/or review documentation to support company comparable assumptions used in valuation models.
  • Evaluate the cost of capital using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM).
  • Perform a counter-analysis of assumptions used to develop DCF, performance multiples and other valuations.
  • Perform a counter-analysis of value creation drivers that have contributed to changes in valuations over the holding period of each investment,
  • Manage databases for portfolio and valuation financials and consolidate key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Support in monitoring and reviewing the financial and operational performance of investments.  
  • Contribute to the preparation of periodic reporting on valuations and investment performance to Management, the Investment Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Provide assistance to internal and external audit processes.
  • Assist in the selection of tools and technology to enhance data management and reporting to support efficient financial reporting.
  • Support the Finance team, from time to time, on other financial management matters of the Company.
  • Assist, from time to time, on the Company initiatives and projects on Finance related matters

 

 

Candidate Profile

 

Required Background

·       Four to seven years of relevant experience in private equity, transaction advisory, valuations or related role.

·       Demonstrated academic excellence. 

·       University degree from a Tier 1 institution.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

·       Interest in Africa50’s mission, strategy and values.

·       Demonstrated experience in emerging markets, Africa a plus.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. 

·       Knowledge of business intelligence solutions such as Capital IQ and/or Bloomberg will be an asset.

·       Culturally sensitive, able to relate to people of diverse backgrounds; living experience in emerging countries is a plus.
